More Freelance Writing Resources

Freelance writing is different than writing short stories, letters, diaries, novels, or other types of material. To quote my favorite freelancer, other than myself of course:

unlike writing a short story or novel, the copywriter uses words to persuasively promote people, businesses, opinions and ideas. More along the lines of advertising writing.

Take a Peek

If you really want to see what freelance writers do all day, simply have a look around. As you surf the Web, the content you see on different sites, the articles you read for information, and even the product descriptions are probably written by a freelance writer. Of course, some website owners write the material for themselves. But, may entrepreneurs outsource these tasks, even if they have the ability to write, simply because it gives them the time needed to work on developing a better product or service, while concentrating on the consumer.

It takes a lot more than a good idea to start a business, even on the Internet. It may be a virtual store or website; but, it requires constant attention to keep up-to-date and competitive. For some entrepreneurs, customer service takes the bulk of their time, even though they have a virtual store.

Like a traditional brick and mortar business, getting information out and promoting a business is constant. You cannot sell your enterprise in the beginning, get some customer interest, and call it good. It is an ongoing process, and exactly why freelancing is a recession-proof occupation.

Start Freelance Writing

Recently, a friend, informed he will be laid off 3 days before Christmas, asked me to tell him a little bit more about freelance writing. I gave him the same suggestions I am about to give you. The sites are not the gimmicks like I got bamboozled by, when I was first trying to find some work-at-home opportunities. They are honest. What you see is what you get:

  1. Elancecom:
  2. You can look around this site for free. But, if you decide to sign up as a writer, or some other type of freelancer, you will have to pay approximately $10 for the ability to bid on projects for the month. You will receive 20 connects. Some project bids take more than one connect, because the job is worth more in pay. If you are the chosen bidder, Elance takes at least 8.75% of your payment-off the top. So, you will want to consider that when you are making your bid. If you want to bid on more projects, but you have use all of your connects, you can always purchase more. It is basically a pay-as-you-go service to connect freelancers with buyers.

  3. Textbrokers.com:
  4. is free. But, you will have to send them a writing sample on a subject of their choosing. Depending on your writing, you will be allowed to select any projects within the ranges of 1-5. As you gain more experience, and if your work is good, you will advance to the next level and have more articles to choose from, in several different categories. The best way to see what I mean is to visit the site and have a look around.

  5. demandstudios.com:
  6. is free and much like Textbroker.com. I have heard the article choices they provide are more complicated, but they also pay more for the successfully finished project. Again, check it out and make up your own mind.

I hope this information will give you a better idea of what is involved with freelance writing and whether it is the right job for you to earn money at home.

Tina, I agree completely. Elance is a wonderful way for beginners to get their feet wet. I don’t recommend it for more experienced copywriters, as there are many better ways to find work after you’ve got experience. People using sites like Elance should always take the website’s membership and other fees into account when bidding on jobs, as these costs do eat into one’s profits.

I offer a beginner’s report on using Elance for anyone who wishes to read it. Simply contact me with your email address and I’ll send it right out.
