The Freelance Writing Information is Free

Three years ago, I was substitute teaching during school hours and being a paraprofessional English tutor two or three nights a week. As a single parent, it got old really fast. By the time I got home, it was time for my youngest to go to bed. I felt like crying because it seemed like I never saw my kids. It was mutual, because I was begged to quit.

Then what? We needed the money. A friend of mine at the college suggested that I utilize my writing skills and start freelancing. I could work from home in the evenings and still be connected with my kids. Sounds great! How do I start freelance writing?

I had asked the million dollar question, but I did not know where to find the answer. I looked around on the Internet. Unfortunately, with my lack of experience and knowledge, I must confess to being caught by more than one work-at-home scam. With a college education and good grades to show for it, you would think I was smart enough not to fall for those ‘start making money today’ offers.

Well, I ended up spending money we did not have, only to find that the one making money today was the unscrupulous individual with the unrealistic offer. In many cases, it was simply a list of more business opportunities. Then, the businesses on that list required subscription fees or something else that cost more money. I had/have much to learn.

The information you will find on this blog will only cost you a moment of your time. I do provide copywriting services and there will eventually be affiliate links in the margin. But, I am tired of the Internet community being scammed. I am simply a single mom that has been blessed with great clients and friends that have given me the opportunities and experiences to become a better freelance writer, and I want to share that with you, my readers.

A writing tip for you: Never use “that” when you mean “who.” Here’s from an article you wrote on Ezine: “A personal pet peeve is the amount of freelancers out there that really lack the skills to be a truly professional writer.”

It should be freelancers out there WHO really lack the skills to be a truly professional writer. (“Who” refers to people; “that” to animals or inanimate objects.) And it should read “truly professional writers,” not “writer,” to agree with the word “freelancers.”

Also, “amount” is the wrong word. It should be “number.”

That’s one jam-packed sentence!

Point well taken! You are so correct. Thank you for pointing out my mistakes. I admit I do have a problem with writing too fast and reading what I want to see, rather than what is on the page. I definitely need to be more mindful of what I write.

As I have pointed out in future posts, I need to ‘walk away’ from an article, and come back to it later, especially if I am tired.

Thank you for the comment. I hope you will continue reading the blog too. You can help me keep on the straight and narrow, and maybe I will have a tidbit here and there to help you out as well.

Also, check out the blogroll for resources from copywriters other than myself.

Thank you,

Tina
