When the Mental Ink Goes Dry

As a writer, I sometimes have a problem, when it feels like my mental inkwell is going dry. For example, I thought for quite a while about what to write today. I am sure there are a lot of topics I can pick from, but it was like looking at a blank piece of paper and not knowing what to write down. Then, I had a marvelously strange idea. Why not tell you the inspiration for some of my best ideas.

Conversations

Believe it or not, I get some of my best ideas from everyday conversations. Whether it is a visit with my colleagues, friends, or clients, something that is said will trigger an idea for a future post. Sometimes, people will just tell me a certain idea should be added in the form of a post. In fact, I hope blog readers will also share ideas. As an English teacher, I might occasionally give general writing tips that any writer can use.

The Shower

I truly do get some of my best ideas when I am in the shower. One week, when I felt my creative juices were not flowing, I told my mother that I should take 4 showers a day. Honestly, I do not know exactly why. But, some of my best ideas pop out when I am shampooing my hair or just relaxing under the hot spray. Maybe it is because I have no distractions. So, all I can do is think.

In the Night

I would like to think I am a good writer. I must be pretty descent, because that is how I make my living. The reason I am saying this is not to brag, but simply to make a personal observation. It seems to me that a good writer’s mind is never at rest. It is constantly going 24/7. For example, I can be sound asleep and wake up with a start. But, before I can go back to sleep, a great idea for an article, a book chapter, or something else will pop into my head.

However, it is imperative to have a notepad and pen next to the bed. So, if a great idea comes to mind in the middle of the night, I can write something down. I need to be sure to remember it in the morning. At times, I have been sad because I cannot remember a nagging idea that I forgot to note.

Now it is your turn. What are your sources of writing inspiration, when the mental ink goes dry?
